ECB Chairman pays tribute to David Allen

28 May 2014

ECB Chairman Giles Clarke has paid tribute to the former Gloucestershire and England cricketer David Allen whose death was announced yesterday.

Mr Clarke said: “David’s passing will be much mourned by everyone connected with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.  He was a very fine off-spinner who gave his county magnificent service for nearly two decades as a player and more recently as a committee member and Club President.

“David also enjoyed an extremely successful international career taking more than 100 Test wickets and playing in 39 Test Matches.  But he will perhaps be best remembered for his courage with the bat; bravely defying the final over from the great West Indian fast bowler Wes Hall to secure England a draw in the famous Lord’s Test of 1963.

“I had the privilege of being coached by David as a youngster and he was always keen to give something back to the game which he enjoyed so much – retaining a close association with his local club Thornbury CC in his later years.

On behalf of ECB, I would like to send sympathies to his widow Joyce and his many friends in the cricket community.
