Downend beat Thornbury in Brightside Ground final to claim county cup

1 September 2016

Downend are the new holders of the Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Cup after overcoming Thornbury by 67 runs in an entertaining final at the Brightside Ground.

It is the first time the county's premier club competition has been held at the home of Gloucestershire Cricket in over a decade and follows on from the ground hosting the Under 19 Finals Day on August 21.

WEPL Premier One side Downend, fresh from a fine win over league champions Frocester, made the most of winning the toss to pile up a challenging total of 285-9 which owed much to Callum Loud’s superb unbeaten 118 from 125 balls (six fours, five sixes).

There was also 59 at the top of the order from former captain Mike Ponter while Ben Ford weighed in with 36 as Richard Trotman captured 3-56.

Thornbury, in reply, needed a strong start and got it thanks to a magnificent opening stand of 151 by Danny Slade (71) and Dan Davis (64).

But both men perished to the spin of Praful Waghela, who went on to finish with 4-41, while Downend skipper Matt Jackson gave nothing away as he put the squeeze on, capturing 5-35 before holding the catch that completed the win as the Thornbury reply ran out of steam to 218 all out.
