1 April 2012

Chris Dent top scored with 93 as Gloucestershire boosted confidence for the new season with a 48-run win over Worcestershire in a one-day friendly at New Road.

Batting at number three after Worcestershire had won the toss and elected to field, Dent scored his runs off just 82 balls, with 12 fours and a six.

He received excellent support from Will Gidman (63) in a second wicket stand of 127, Gidman's runs coming off 88 deliveries, with 6 fours and a six.

After their good work Ian Cockbain (48 not out) and Dan Housego (31 not out) ensured a healthy Gloucestershire total of 277-4 from their 40 overs.

Cockbain's runs came off just 24 balls and featured 4 fours and 2 sixes, while Housego faced 21 deliveries and hit 2 fours and a six.

In reply Worcestershire were soon in trouble at 27-3 as Will Gidman sent back Vikram Solanki and Neil Pinner, while David Wade accounted for opener Matt Pardoe.

But James Cameron and Daryl Mitchell then put together a stand of 145, both scoring 74, before Jack Taylor had Cameron caught by David Payne.

From 172-3 Worcestershire plummeted to 229 all out, with Payne taking four of the wickets. The left-arm seamer finished with 4-49, while Will Gidman took 2-19.

Ed Young, back from his winter with the Darren Lehmann Adademy in Australia, was in Gloucestershire's team, bowling eight overs for 41 runs.

Dent again proved his worth as an off-spinner with 1-31 from five overs as his side finished their pre-season programme in morale boosting fashion.
