Dent Smashes Career Best At Cardiff

19 May 2013

Chris Dent hit a magnificent 151 not out to help Gloucestershire to an exciting seven-run Yorkshire Bank 40 victory over Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium.

Having been invited to bat first, the visitors hammered 288-5 from their 40 overs, Michael Klinger making 40, Benny Howell 26 and Alex Gidman 23.

In reply Glamorgan recovered from a bad start to post 281-6, James Fuller returning 3-42 from his eight overs, including two maidens.

The Gloucestershire innings was dominated by Dent, who smashed 17 fours and 3 sixes, facing just 113 balls in his first one-day century.

He shared stands of 67 with Klinger, 56 with Gidman and 74 with Howell after going in at number three with the total 18-1.

There was also a fifth-wicket partnership of 35 in only 19 balls with Fuller, who contributed a brisk 13.

Fuller was soon impressing with the ball on his first YB40 appearance of the season, sending back Will Bragg and Chris Cooke as Glamorgan slipped to 22-2 in reply.

But from 27-3 Mark Wallace led a determined Glamorgan fightback with a brilliant century, putting on 95 with Jim Allenby, who then fell to Benny Howell fpr 39.

Murray Goodwin helped Wallace add a further 67, but Glamorgan were falling well behind the required run rate and needed exactly 100 off the last ten overs when Goodwin was dismissed by Liam Norwell for 36.

It still looked possible as Graham Wagg blasted 3 sixes and 4 fours in a rapid half-century, but when Fuller returned to claim his wicket Glamorgan still needed 18 off seven balls.

It proved beyond even Wallace, who finished unbeaten on 118, off 112 balls, with 10 fours and a six, as his side fell frustratingly short.

For Gloucestershire it means five points from their first four YB40 Group C games, the only defeat being at the hands of Leicestershire.
