Dent Fifty Helps Secure First Innings Lead

21 April 2014

Chris Dent hit a half-century as Gloucestershire battled hard to take control on the second day of the LV=County Championship match with Glamorgan at Cardiff.

There were also useful runs from Will Tavare, Hamish Marshall and Tom Smith to the help the visitors to a first innings lead of 85, with one wicket still in hand.

The day began with Glamorgan 47-6. David Payne failed to complete a hat-trick with the opening delivery, but more wickets fell to leave the home side 72-9 at one point.

Gloucestershire were then frustrated by a last wicket stand of 73 between Graham Wagg (54 not out) and Michael Hogan, who made 24.

It was finally broken by Matt Taylor (2-29). Payne (3-29), Will Gidman (3-34) and James Fuller (2-47) were the other wicket-takers.

Gloucestershire looked set for a healthy lead when, despite the loss of skipper Michael Klinger with the total on 31, they reached 102-1 in reply.

Dent’s 52 came off 72 balls with 8 fours, while Tavare built on his century against Hampshire with 42, from 81 deliveries, with five boundaries.

A collapse to 144-6 followed before Marshall (32) and Smith (38 not out) added 42 for the seventh wicket.

Wily spinner Dean Cosker kept chipping away with 5-46 from 22 overs. But Smith stood firm and had faced 84 balls by stumps, hitting 8 fours.

Gloucestershire were 230-9 at the close and looking well placed in what so far has been a low-scoring game.
