"We'll Learn From That" Says Michael

21 June 2013

Michael Klinger described it as a “good learning curve” for Gloucestershire’s bowlers after Nic Maddinson’s brilliant 181 had helped Australia A dominate the first day of the tour match at Bristol.

The visitors ran up 331-4 declared after winning the toss in excellent batting conditions. Opener Maddinson faced just 142 balls and blasted 22 fours and 9 sixes.

By the close Gloucestershire had struggled to 104-5 in reply and skipper Klinger admitted it had been a below par performance.

“I’m a bit disappointed if only because of how well we have been playing lately,” he said. “We didn’t click as a bowling unit today and did not bowl well to Maddinson early on.

“Maddo really came at us and that is a good learning curve for our bowlers. It was a fantastic innings from a genuine prospect for Australia in the future

“I’ve played against him a fair bit at home. He didn’t get many runs until halfway through last season, but from then on he played similarly to how he did today.

“The way to go with him seems to be to let him play with a bit of freedom. He is obviously a David Warner type of player and is still very young.

“Our bowling has been very disciplined in recent games. I’m not sure whether the boys were up for it today because it is not a game with points at stake.

“When a guy takes us on like Nic did in the future we need to be better.”

During the tea interval Gloucestershire caps were presented by David Allen to Dan Christian on debut and left-arm spinner Tom Smith, who was also making his first appearance for the club on loan from Middlesex.
