Dan Top Scores But Students Get Top Marks
18 May 2012
Dan Housego top scored with 68 as Gloucestershire were dismissed for a disappointing 227 on the opening day of the match with Cambridge MCCU at Fenner's.
The former Middlesex batsman underlined his return to fitness after a shoulder problem by hitting 11 fours and a six in his 160-ball innings, which spanned more than three hours.
But it was a poor day for the other top order batsmen after skipper Hamish Marshall had won the toss. Chris Dent (18), Benny Howell (13), Marshall himself (15) and Ian Cockbain (15) all went cheaply as the county struggled to 113-5.
Ed Young made 28 and Jack Taylor 36 to bolster the total, but most of the first day honours went to Cambridge University seamer Robert Woolley, who returned a career-best 5-48.
He sent back five of Gloucestershire's top seven batsmen. By the close the students had replied with six for no wicket off the only over of their first innings bowled by Liam Norwell.
Liam and David Payne were both named in the visiting line-up having recovered from injuries. David Wade was omitted from the squad of 12.
