Cockbain Shines As 2nds Match Warwickshire
20 May 2014
Ian Cockbain was in good form as Gloucestershire matched a strong Warwickshire side in a Twenty20 double header at Cheltenham,
The teams won one match each, Gloucestershire bouncing back from a comprehensive defeat in the opening game to pull off an excellent victory in the second.
Cockbain hit 55 off 46 balls and Liam Norwell scored an unbeaten 19 in an otherwise poor batting display as the hosts could manage only 109-9 in game one.
Varun Chopra and Will Porterfield then knocked off the required runs as Warwickshire completed a ten-wicket win. Norwell was the pick of the bowlers, conceding only 24 from his four overs.
The visitors batted first in game two and were restricted to 141 by some good bowling from Norwell, Jack Taylor, Robbie Williams and Graeme McCarter.
Gloucestershire got off to a flier in reply with Marc Lezar hitting 36 off 33 balls and Cameron Herring 22 off 17. After they both fell the match was finely balanced, but Cockbain again made an impressive contribution with 26 off 15 deliveries.
With eight wickets down and 17 still needed off 11 balls, Gloucestershire looked in trouble. But Scott Phillips hit his first ball from Richard Jones for six over long-off, his second over long-on for four and his fourth over long-off for six to level the scores.
McCarter then hit the first ball of the final over for four to win the game.
