Chris Liddle announces retirement
16 December 2019
Gloucestershire Cricket seam bowler Chris Liddle has announced his retirement from cricket and will take up a new role as bowling coach at Northamptonshire.
A successful term as bowling coach of the Netherlands national team at the T20 World Cup Qualifiers this Autumn opened the door to new opportunities for “Lids”. He will join Northants in the new year teaming up with David Ripley (Head Coach).
Chris said:
“I would like to say a huge thank you to all the players and coaches I’ve been able to share a dressing room with over the last 17 years.
“From the early days at Leicestershire, on to a decade representing Sussex and the last four seasons with Gloucestershire, I have thoroughly enjoyed my professional career and am proud to look back on what I was able to achieve both personally and for each team I represented.
I’m incredibly excited about the next chapter and starting as bowling coach with Northamptonshire in the new year. I’m really looking forward to working collaboratively with the players and coaches and building towards further success.
I’d like to thank Gloucestershire for my time here and Bristol will always hold a special place in our family with our little boy being born here. I wish the Club and players the very best for what will be an exciting summer ahead celebrating the Club’s 150th anniversary and being back in Division One.
Thanks again to all those that I’ve have the pleasure of playing with, see you next season. Lids”
Liddle, who joined Gloucestershire in 2016 after a decade at Sussex, had arguably his best season for The Shire in 2019. He took 11 wickets in the Vitality Blast at a team best strike rate of 12.6. He also took nine wickets in five innings in the Royal London Cup.
Chris has consistently been one of the best one-day bowlers in the Gloucestershire side, leading the team in wickets taken in the Royal London Cup in 2017 and 2018.
Gloucestershire Cricket CEO Will Brown said:
“All at the Club would like to wish Chris and his family the very best for their new life and the next stage of his career with Northants.
Chris has been an integral member of the squad both on and off the pitch, particularly in limited overs cricket where he has regularly been one of the leading wicket takers both for Gloucestershire and across the country. His longevity and ability to take wickets consistently over a 15-year period is remarkable.
Chris has also worked hard as a mentor to some of our developing young bowlers and we are sure he will flourish in his new coaching role.”
Finishing his career with 122 List-A wickets at 27.2, Chris currently has the 17th best career strike rate in List A cricket.
Everyone at Gloucestershire Cricket would like to thank Chris for his contributions to the Club on and off the field and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future.
