Chris Is Viewed As Potential Future Captain

John Bracewell has confirmed that Chris Dent (above) is being viewed as a future captain of Gloucestershire.

The opening batsman acted as skipper for several pre-season games and will now share the vice-captain duties with Hamish Marshall.

Director of Cricket Bracewell said: "Making Chris captain for some of our warm-up games was definitely done with an eye to the future.

"I feel we have three or four guys who could develop the necessary skills to be skipper, but we have to look first at someone who is sure to be selected.

"Chris is one of the first names to go on our team-sheet and has proven himself as a performer on the park.

"As he is growing as a person, as well as a player, he is demonstrating some excellent leadership qualities.

"He worked well with Michael Klinger last year and has stood beside Alex Gidman in the field for three seasons, so he is really maturing as a cricketer.

"I could see Chris being club captain one day. There are other candidates, who need to get on the park more often before they can be seriously considered.

"Cricket is about leading from the front, as Michael did for us last season. I don't want to put too much pressure on Chris or Craig Miles, but to me they are our two players with stand-out international potential."

Chris himself said: "I don't know yet what sort of captain I would make, but I certainly wasn't going to turn down the opportunity when it was offered to me.

"It is obviously an honour. I enjoyed the new challenge in pre-season and have some great senior players to learn from, but what the future holds in that respect I am not sure."
