Charlesworth extends contract at Gloucestershire
26 August 2021
Ben Charlesworth has signed a new deal at Gloucestershire Cricket that will see him remain at the Club until the end of the 2023 season.
The 20-year-old all-rounder has continued to live up to the hype that has been ever-present in his young career, and has been awarded for his efforts with a new contract at Gloucestershire Cricket.
Speaking about his contract extension, Charlesworth said:
“I’m over the moon to commit my future to this great Club. I feel we are moving in an exciting direction with a young squad and I’m hoping to be a part of some real success in the next couple of years.”
Following a less than ideal start to the summer, suffering a dislocated shoulder in a T20 warm-up fixture against Somerset, Charlesworth has shown his quality in the Royal London Cup.
Opening the batting, Charlesworth averaged 52 across six matches including a match-winning 99* against Hampshire at Bristol County Ground and 87 against Durham in what was to be the Club’s first win of the competition.
Interim Head Coach, Ian Harvey was delighted to extend Charlesworth’s stay at the Club:
“It’s absolutely brilliant for the team and the Club that Ben has committed his future to Gloucestershire. He is a fantastic player that will continue to improve thanks to his determination that was on show for everyone to see as he came back from injury this year.
“Ben has not only shown his ability as an opening batter in both red-ball and white-ball cricket, but as a player who can take wickets. We are looking to develop his skills over the next few years and are very excited at the Club about his potential.”
Since making his debut for the County at the age of 17, Charlesworth has featured in 15 first-class matches. In those matches, he’s made 417 runs with four half-centuries including two unbeaten scores of 77 that currently stand as his career best. He has also taken eight wickets at an average of 29.25.
Charlesworth has been involved in the England youth setup since July 2018 when he was selected to play for an Invitational XI against South Africa Under 19s. He was the top scorer in the match with 143 runs earning him a place in the England Under 19 team that faced South Africa in a three match One-Day series later that month.
In 2019, Charlesworth was named in England’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, a tournament in which he was only able to feature in two matches. He averaged 59 runs opening the batting and finished the tournament England’s third highest scorer despite only playing two innings.
Supporters will have the opportunity to see Ben and Gloucestershire next in action when Northamptonshire make the trip to Bristol for the first match of the County Championship Division stage on Monday 30 August.
