County Championship preview | Gloucestershire vs Sussex
16 September 2024
Gloucestershire return to County Championship action on Tuesday for the final home game of the season against Sussex.
The visitors arrive in Bristol on the brink of promotion to Division One having won seven of their 12 matches so far this season.
Gloucestershire, meanwhile go into the match having not only beaten Middlesex at Lord’s last week, but also fresh from winning the 2024 Vitality Blast at Edgbaston on Saturday. That win against Middlesex, however, was Gloucestershire’s second of the season and featured a debut of dreams for young seamer Archie Bailey. The 19-year-old claimed four second inning wickets as Gloucestershire ran out as winners by four wickets.
That victory lifted Gloucestershire to fifth place in Division Two on 138 points while Sussex sit in first place on 200 points.
In their last match against Glamorgan at Hove, Sussex claimed an emphatic win by a margin of an innings and 87 runs. Having bowled Glamorgan out for 186 in the first innings, Sussex hit 461 with centuries coming from John Simpson and Tom Clark. Struggling against Sussex’s bowling attack, Glamorgan were then bowled out again for 218, 87 runs short of parity with the hosts.
A win for Sussex against Gloucestershire this week would almost certainly confirm their promotion to Division One.
