Centurion Ed Talks Of Coming Back

12 July 2012

Ed Cowan says he will consider joining Gloucestershire next summer – providing he is not playing for Australia in the Ashes.

The Tasmania batsman, recruited to bridge the gap between the departure of Kane Williamson and the arrival of fellow New Zealander Rob Nicol, has already made a big impression.

Having announced himself with a match-winning 70 in the Friends Life t20 match against Worcestershire last week, the 30-year-old left hander registered a maiden LV=County Championship hundred on the second day of the Division Two match against Essex at Cheltenham.

And the Australia A captain told this website he would love to come back and repeat the experience in 2013.

He said: “Obviously, my main aim is to be in the Australia Test squad for the Ashes next year.

“But if I’m not selected for Australia, I would like to think I could be back playing county cricket for Gloucestershire.

“We talked about it last winter but, for whatever reason, it did not come off until now.

"I want to play in an Ashes tour, but that does not mean I wouldn’t consider returning to Gloucestershire in the future if the possibility arose.”

Cowan shared in a stand of 104 with Hamish Marshall as Gloucestershire advanced their score from 147-2 to 284-4 in a rain-shortened second day.

Commenting on the conditions, Marshall said: “It was a bit of a grind really, nothing like the free-scoring we normally associate with Cheltenham.

“Considering the rain we have had, the wicket was not too bad, but it is still pretty wet out there.

“There was not a lot of sideways movement off the seam, but the bowlers were pretty accurate and I thought Essex fielded well.

“It is one of those pitches where you just have to be patient, dig in and not take too many risks.

“It did not help that a lot of balls that would normally have gone for four here were holding up in the outfield and only going for two. The new ball helped when it came along, but it was hard work.”
