Cameron Top Scores On Day To Remember

24 April 2013

Cameron Herring top scored with 43 in his first LV=County Championship innings as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 192 by Northants on the opening day of the match at Bristol.

The 18-year-old wicketkeeper, who was presented with his county cap by chairman Rex Body before the start, went in at 90-6 and was last man out, having faced 81 balls and hit 8 fours.

By the close Northants had replied with 107-3, Liam Norwell picking up 2-26, and, with the pitch still assisting the bowlers, Gloucestershire are well in the game.

To complete a memorable day for Herring, he took a diving catch off the bowling of Will Gidman to dismiss Northants opener Kyle Coetzer for 24.

But it was his mature innings which proved the major talking point as he shared stands of 48 with Jack Taylor, who made 31, and 33 with last man Liam Norwell.

At the close Cameron told this website: "I just tried to play my natural game. The ball was still swinging around when I went in and I had to dig in a bit when a couple more wickets fell.

"There was still movement for our bowlers in the final session so, while we would have liked 30 more runs, I think 192 should prove competitive.

"I've opened the batting for much of my career to date. Now I have slid down to number seven as a result of being a wicketkeeper and I am more than happy with that.

"I played club cricket in Australia during the winter and that proved a very important experience in my development as a player.

"Even so, I never expected to be picked for the first Championship game against Essex. I was expecting to feel my way into the new season with a few second XI appearances.

"The chance has come sooner that I anticipated and now I have to make the most of it. Getting a few runs is a great boost and hopefully I can bat grittily and go big with a score before too long."

Gloucestershire skipper Michael Klinger faced a tough decision when winning the toss on an overcast morning, but had no regrets.

He told this website: "We felt conditions would stay pretty much the same overhead for the first couple of days and decided to try and get runs on the board.

"The ball seamed around in the morning session and we probably lost a couple of wickets too many. The Northants bowlers put the ball in good areas and made it difficult for us.

"A few of our guys got starts and there are no excuses regarding the pitch. We needed one or two to go on to a decent score.

"Cameron's effort was fantastic in his first hit in the Championship. And I thought Liam Norwell really stuck his chest out in the final session to bowl just as we want him to.

"That has set the standard for tomorrow. We didn't always get it right with the ball, but conditions remain helpful and if we can put it in the right areas in the morning we can stay right in the game."
