Cameron Bancroft named Gloucestershire red-ball captain for 2025 season
19 February 2025
Australian batter Cameron Bancroft as red-ball captain for the 2025 season. Bancroft, who returned to the club in 2024, will lead the team following an outstanding year with the bat across all formats.
The 32-year-old was approved as captain by the Executive Board after a recommendation from Head Coach Mark Alleyne and brings leadership experience from his time captaining Durham in the County Championship and One Day Cup in 2019. He has also played for Western Australia, Perth Scorchers, and Sydney Thunder, and has represented Australia in 10 Test matches between 2016 and 2019.
Bancroft was a key performer in Gloucestershire’s improved batting displays in 2024, finishing as the county’s leading run-scorer in the victorious Vitality Blast campaign, amassing 534 runs at an average of 33.37.
In the County Championship, he was equally prolific, scoring 832 runs at an impressive average of 48.94, including three centuries—one of which was a match-winning 130 not out against Northants. He also recorded a century in the One Day Cup, scoring 100 against Surrey at The Oval.
His ability to perform under pressure was evident in the Vitality Blast final, where he struck a crucial half-century in a 112-run opening partnership with Miles Hammond, helping Gloucestershire lift the trophy.

Vitality Blast will return to both Bristol & Cheltenham in 2025 with Gloucestershire set to defend the Vitality Blast title after a Glorious run in last year's competition saw Jack Taylor's side lift gold to #BecomeGlorious.
Bancroft's appointment marks a new era for the team as they look to build on their recent white-ball success.
Speaking about his new role, Gloucestershire’s new red-ball skipper said:
"I'm really looking forward to this summer. It was a real honor when Mark asked me. Graeme has led this group fantastically over the years, and he has built a strong foundation. My role now is to see what I can bring as a leader—building on what he's already delivered.
"We would have liked to perform better last season, but there were still plenty of positives. If we build on those learnings we’ll be in a great position for the season ahead."
Head Coach Mark Alleyne praised Bancroft’s leadership qualities, adding:
"Cameron had an impressive year with us in 2024 and led by example in everything he did. I love his dedication to preparation and his subsequent transference of that in the middle.
His experience of playing Test match cricket and winning four-day titles gives him a broad base of experience which our players can feed off."
The Shire begin their red-ball campaign away to Derbyshire on Friday 4 April, before Glamorgan are the visitors for the first fixture in Bristol beginning on Friday 11 April.
With Bancroft at the helm, Gloucestershire fans will hope for another memorable season in 2025.
