Buccaneers face Foxes in Glos U19 T20 final

26 August 2016

2015 Champions Bristol Buccaneers will defend their Gloucestershire Under 19 T20 title against Frocester Foxes after both teams came through their semi-finals at the Brightside Ground, Bristol.

The final will be played this Sunday (August 28) at Bristol Cricket Club (12.30pm start) after rain brought a premature end to finals day for the second year running.

The Buccaneers made it through with a six wicket win over Thornbury Thunder while the Foxes progressed after beating Cirencester Centurions by four wickets.

Sponsored by Pegler Yorkshire, the competition recreates the razzamatazz of the NatWest T20 Blast coloured clothing, music and a pink ball.

In the first semi Frocester won the toss and chose to field first.

The Centurions struggled to get going and lost wickets at regular intervals before some late blows from Josh Langley (12) and number ten Seb Ellis (15) to help them reach 116 all out.

Angus Gegg finished with 3-26 while Ben Hopkins (2-13) helped finish off the innings with two wickets in an over.

In reply Cirencester made early inroads through two excellent pieces of fielding. First skipper Alex Binnie showed quick reactions to stump Gegg for 0 after he had dragged his foot a fraction outside of the crease off Jono Jamieson-Black (2-11).

Will Helmke (14) and Ben Hopkins staged a recovery before the former fell to a spectacular catch by Jamie Jamieson-Black off his brother Jono that wouldn’t have looked out of place at any level of cricket.

The catch was one of a number of highlights from the day caught on camera by My Action Replay.

The catch sparked jubilant celebrations but Cirencester were brought back down to earth by the biggest partnership of the match between Hopkins (36) and Chad Trainor (24).

Both eventually departed but, sensing victory, the Foxes’ momentum continued through Ed Wilson (18) and 13-year-old Will Naish (15 not out).

Two wickets in an over for Jake Holmes (2-5) gave the Centurions some hope but it proved too little too late as Frocester cruised into the final with a four wicket win with four overs to spare.

In the second semi-final Bristol Buccaneers won the toss and put Thornbury Thunder in to bat.

And the Thunder started well, adding 31 for the first wicket before the aggressive Jordan Hicks was caught by Harry Thompson off Rob Clarke for 21 (off 10 balls).

Spin proved to be the key weapon in the Buccaneer’s armoury. Rishi Panchal (2-21) dismissed Dan Lezar (0) and Marcus Wormwell for 16. The leg spin of Cam Scott (1-23) and Vir Lakhani (1-26) and left arm spin of Louis Shaw (1-26) brought further breakthroughs.

Despite losing wickets, Thunder continued to score at a healthy rate thanks to Prevan Nayanah Rajh (28 off 23 balls), Harry Wormwell (36 not out off 32 balls) and Jack Gillett (28 off 21).

Gillett in particular gave the innings late impetus with three successive fours off Louis Shaw – a sweep, a lofted straight drive and a reverse sweep.

Rain brought about a break with two overs of the Thornbury innings remaining. On restarting they added another 16 runs to finish on 142-7.

In response the Buccaneers were in trouble at 16-2 but bounced back with a counter-attacking stand between Fin Trenouth and Rob Clarke.

Trenouth was particularly impressing smashing 50 not out off just 29 balls before having to retire as per the tournament rules. His knock included five fours and three sixes as he dominated the Thunder attack.

The wicketkeeper/batsman was well-supported by Clarke ( 48 off 36 balls inc 6 fours, 2 sixes).

When Clarke became one of two quick wickets for Marcus Wormwell, the Buccaneers were wobbling on 120-4.

But they made sure of a comfortable victory off the first ball of the 18th over thanks to an unbeaten 26 run partnership between Scott (21*) and Lakhani (10*).

The match was completed just in time before a second wave of rain came in and ended play for the day.
