Bracewell On Track Of Big Name Signing

4 October 2014

Gloucestershire are targeting a former international cricketer and Ashes winner to captain the team in four-day cricket next season.

Director of Cricket John Bracewell told this website that he is close to recruiting “a pretty big name” to take over the reins from Michael Klinger, who will not be returning to the club until June next summer.

If all goes well, the signing could be just days away, and John believes it could have a major influence on LV=County Championship fortunes in 2015.

He said: “We need to bring in a captain because Michael Klinger is not going to be with us for the first two months of the season and Alex Gidman is leaving.

“I am reluctant to give the role to someone currently in the side because I don’t think anyone is ready for it.

“We are not far away from being able to sign a pretty big name - a former international with great credibility and an Ashes winner - who will be able to lead our team with a depth of experience not seen at this club for a long time.

“You would class him as an all-rounder, but our intention is to use him as a batsman."

John was hugely encouraged by the way Gloucestershire bowled out the opposition twice to win their last two Championship away games of the season without the services of the injured Will Gidman.

“We have secured our best young bowlers on long contracts and, with the right help, we could have the strongest attack in the Championship Second Division next season,” he said.
