Benny The Bowler Strikes At Derby

25 May 2014

Benny Howell showed his value as a back-up seamer by claiming two wickets on the opening day of the LV=County Championship match with Derbyshire at Derby.

After a delayed start until after lunch, Michael Klinger won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first, a decision backed up by his bowlers as Derbyshire closed on 166-6.

Benny claimed the scalps of former Gloucestershire player Marcus North and Alex Hughes to end the day with figures of 2-28 from 17 overs after Will Gidman (2-30) had made earlier breakthroughs.

Will took his wicket tally in the Championship this season to 23 by dismissing Stephen Moore and Wayne Madsen, who was looking dangerous on 33 when caught behind by on-loan wicketkeeper Geraint Jones.

Opener Paul Borrington was run out by Will Tavare for 42 after a stand of 77 with skipper Madsen and Gloucestershire's bowlers kept a tight rein on the scoring rate throughout the day, sending down 71 overs.

James Fuller weighed in with the wicket of Gareth Cross in the closing stages and Klinger's men could feel well satisfied with their efforts to build on the victory over Kent.
