Benny Claims First Bowling Point
12 April 2013
Benny Howell earned Gloucestershire's first bowling bonus point of the new LV=County Championship season on a rain-ruined third day of the match with Essex at Chelmsford.
Only 43.5 overs were possible as the home side progressed from an overnight 30-2 to 177-3 in reply to Gloucestershire's 409-5 declared.
Tom Westley and Ravi Bopara built a third-wicket stand of 116 for the hosts before Howell made the breakthrough, trapping Bopara lbw for 64, made off 115 balls, with 7 fours.
It proved to be Gloucestershire's only success as Westley ended the day unbeaten on 82, having faced 141 deliveries and hit 12 fours.
Mark Pettini was 18 not out and James Fuller, who claimed both second day victims, had the best bowling figures with 2-46 from 13 overs.
As on the previous day, the morning session was washed out and Essex were not able to resume their innings until 2.55pm.
