Western Storm recently held a successful two-day event in Somerset designed to encourage women and girls to get involved in the game.
Entitled 'Storm Champions', the initiative is aimed at people aged 16 and above who want to help grow the women’s game as Western Storm General Manger, Lisa Pagett explains. “The programme was designed to help get more women and girls involved in grassroots cricket and to take on a more active role,” she said. “It’s a bespoke course that we’ve designed in order to help females develop their confidence, knowledge and expertise to be able to deliver more cricket in their clubs or their local communities.
“The two-day programme involves a number of elements including introductions to scoring and umpiring as well as giving information on how they can market or promote their club. There’s a section on how they can recruit more members and there’s also a coach support worker element so that there’s an introduction to coaching in the programme as well.
“It’s about getting women and girls out and about in the Western Storm region in order to help grow the game from the bottom up.
“We’ve run a successful course in Somerset which saw people from 11 different clubs come together which will hopefully see good work within those clubs spread across the region.
“There will be another course in Cornwall which will start in March because we want to spread the reach of this in order to grow women and girls cricket across the whole of the South West. Whilst we will be looking to spread the message through the main Western Storm Kia Super League team, we are very aware that there is an important role that we can play at the grassroots level.
“It’s really important for young girls who are interested in cricket to be able to see women fulfilling active roles within the game, not just in a playing capacity.”
