Batsmen Struggle In Gloom At Derby

27 May 2014

Gloucestershire's hopes of batting bonus points were dealt four major blows on the third day of the rain-ruined LV=County Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby.

Michael Klinger, Chris Dent, Alex Gidman and Will Tavare all fell cheaply as the visitors looked to build on an overnight score of 21 without loss.

Only 17.5 overs were possible because of rain and bad light, but Derbyshire's bowlers made the most of them to defend their first innings total of 268.

After another delayed start only four runs had been added when Dent was bowled by Mark Footitt for 12. Klinger failed to add to his overnight score of 12 as he fell in the next over to a catch by Paul Borrington off Tim Groenewald. Gidman and Tavare added 26 in 12 overs before, with the total on 55, Alex was caught by David Wainwright off Footitt for six.

Tavare had battled his way to 22 off 44 balls when he was caught behind off Tony Palladino to make the score 63-4.

Geraint Jones scored his first runs for Gloucestershire with a two off Palladino before the light closed in and ended play for the day. Hamish Marshall was not out nine and the scoreboard read 66-4, with Derbyshire leading by 212 runs.
