Bancroft wins Australia A call-up
10 May 2016
Gloucestershire’s Cameron Bancroft has been named in the Australia A squad for a quadrangular series in north Queensland later this year.
The Western Australia batsman/wicketkeeper is part of a 24-man party that will take on South Africa, Cricket Australia’s (CA) National Performance squad and another yet-to-be announced team.
The matches will take place from July 30 to September 18.
The 23-year-old – who has played one T20 his country – is joined in the squad by a number of players with international experience including Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins and Moises Henriques.
CA's General Manager of Team Performance, Pat Howard said the series would give players a chance to stake their claim for the full squad ahead of the Australian summer.
“This is an important series for us that will provide the national selectors and coaches with excellent insights into those players who are either returning from injury or have impressed in the past 12 months and who could play a role for the Australian team in the future.
“We are lucky enough to have some talented young up and coming batsman performing well. Travis Head, Travis Dean, Cameron Bancroft and Jake Lehmann have all had impressive seasons and thoroughly deserve this opportunity.”
Cameron – who is with Gloucestershire until the end of May - impressed across all formats during the last Australian domestic season.
He made 732 runs in the 2015/16 Sheffield Shield at an average of 47 and averaged over 55 in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup.
The right hander was called up to the Australia Test squad for the tour to Bangladesh last October which was scrapped due to security fears.
Peter Handscomb, who played for Gloucestershire in 2015 has also been selected for the mixture of unofficial Tests and one-day matches.
