Antony Francis Hignell, OBE
27 October 2015
It is with great sadness that Gloucestershire County Cricket Club today announces the death of Tony Hignell.
Tony was a right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-pace bowler who made a single First-Class appearance for the County Club during the 1947 season, against Cambridge University. He scored 7 runs in the only innings in which he batted, and conceded 48 runs with the ball in 18 overs.
During the 1948 season he was part of the Gloucestershire Second XI in the Minor Counties Championship.
In 1949 he was the AAA Javelin Champion, and in 1950 he placed fourth (with a throw of 55.34m) at the British Empire Games in Auckland (the forerunner of the modern Commonwealth Games). Tony qualified as a Doctor in 1953.
He is the father of Alastair Hignell, CBE, who played cricket for Cambridge University and Gloucestershire (1974-1983) and rugby union for England, Cambridge University and Bristol.
The Club sends its condolences to the Hignell family.
