Alex Slams Ton Against Students

Alex Gidman hit an unbeaten 140 as Gloucestershire ran up 342-5 declared on the opening day of the match against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner's

Hamish Marshall contributed 98 to a fourth-wicket stand of 228 with Gidman after the county had been reduced to 85-3, having been invited to bat.

Gidman hit 18 fours and 5 sixes in facing 136 balls, while Marshall faced 109 deliveries and collected eight boundaries.

Chris Dent had earlier scored 53 to launch the innings. Alasdair Pollock claimed 3-102 for Cambridge MCCU.

When the students replied Ian Saxelby claimed his first wicket of the season as opener Phillip Hughes was caught behind.

The wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick claimed two more catches off Liam Norwell, who like Saxelby was returning after injury.

Cambridge MCCU closed on 46-3 off 20.3 overs.
