Alex Praise For Skipper As Match Hots Up

6 June 2013

Alex Gidman paid glowing tribute to Michael Klinger after his successor as Gloucestershire captain had led a determined fightback on the second day of the LV=County Championship clash with Glamorgan at Bristol.

The Australian was unbeaten on 80 at stumps, with his side 179-1 in reply to the visitors' first innings total of 448.

Gareth Roderick made 41 and Dan Housego was unbeaten on 46. Earlier Craig Miles had finished with 5-83 in the Glamorgan innings to continue his impressive start to the season.

Alex, who has just signed a three-year extension to his contract with Gloucestershire, is full of praise for the effect Klinger has had since joining the club.

Th former skipper told this website: “Michael is quiet and laid back at the same time as being determined and a deep thinker who cares deeply about winning as all Australians do. As Englishmen, I think we need to hear that more often and he is a good thing for our group.

“Some of the starts he has given us in red and white ball cricket have been exceptional and he has all the attributes you need in a leader.”

Of the match situation. Alex added: “There is a lot of cricket left in this game and the weather is set fair which is good news. Our aim today was to do what we did. We could have bowled them out for a little bit less, but it was always going to be tough.

“We have lots if wickets left going into tomorrow and I guess we will bat and look to see where we are at. We won’t think too far ahead just yet.

“I genuinely have no idea whether we will declare or not, because we have not been in this position previously with Michael as our leader. I’m sure he will have his own ideas as to what he would like to do, but, first and foremost, we have to come back and win the first hour.

“If you bowl a bad ball, it is quite easy to hit a four. If you bowl a good ball, it is quite difficult to score and Glamorgan bowled pretty well.

“Hopefully, there will be some good sunshine and we can accelerate our scoring when we need to.”
