Alex Hits Ton But Lancs On Top

31 May 2013

Alex Gidman hit 110 as Gloucestershire extended their first innings total to 222 all out on the third day of the LV=County Championship match with Lancashire at Liverpool.

But that still gave the home side a lead of 88, which they extended to 327 by posting 239-7 in their second innings by stumps, having been 62-5 at one point.

Gloucestershire now face a tough batting assignment on the final day to avoid defeat. But, without Gidman's battling innings, their cause would already be lost.

Alex was still 15 short of his hundred when joined by Ed Young, demoted in the order because of the wrist injury he picked up on day one.

He bravely faced 14 balls, allowing Gidman scope to reach three figures with a six and a four off successive deliveries from Kyle Hogg.

By then Alex had faced 170 balls and hit 8 fours and 2 sixes. The next highest score in Gloucestershire's innings was 39 from Benny Howell.

Craig Miles later struck with the first ball of Lancashire's second innings, removing opener Andrea Agathangelou to a catch by Chris Dent.

The hosts looked in trouble as further wickets fell to Graeme McCarter, Benny Howell, Liam Norwell, who removed both Karl Brown and Steven Croft.

But Ashwell Prince and Gareth Cross both hit 64 to frustrate Gloucestershire's hopes before an unbeaten 52 from Wayne White re-established Lancashire's grip.
