Alex Frustrated At Failure To Win
21 July 2012
Alex GIdman was sorry Gloucestershire were unable to give their loyal supporters a victory to cheer on the final day of the LV=County Championship match against Leicestershire at Cheltenham.
A large Festival audience turned up to witness a thrilling run chase as Gloucestershire were set a victory target of 222.
The home side looked odds on to wrap up their third win of the season, only to lose wickets during the closing overs and eventually come up 13 runs short.
Alex told this website: “It was a really great game to have at Cheltenham and everyone has been here supporting us day in and day out.
“Considering the weather we have had, the number of people who have turned up has been fantastic.
“We gave them an entertaining final day and I’m only sorry we could not give them a victory to send them home happy.
“But we produced a cracking game that ebbed and flowed and credit must go to both sides.”
Half centuries from Alex and Dan Housego put Gloucestershire in charge, only for a late clatter of wickets to undermine the chase.
Alex reflected: “We did pretty much everything we wanted to with the bat. It was not an easy wicket to bat on and we had to lay some foundations at the top of the innings.
“We needed to be intent and cautious at the same time and we managed to lay a good base. I then came in and chanced my arm a bit, which was part of the plan, and we got it down to a winnable position.
“But we lacked a little bit of composure at the crunch time and Leicestershire bowled well at the death. We lost a few wickets and that out the pressure back onto us.
“We may be a young team, but we should know what to do in those situations by now. It was a tough, pressurised situation, and we came up just short.”
Gloucestershire take on Group A rivals Middlesex in a CB40 match on the final day of the Festival tomorrow and overseas signing Rob Nicol is set to make his debut.
