Advance travel warning for last day of the 2016 Cricket Festival

20 July 2016

Gloucestershire Cricket would like to warn members and supporters who are planning to visit the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival on Sunday 24 July of the following; which may have an impact on their journey:

A lorry, transporting a 235 tonne National Grid transformer, is expected to make an impact on traffic using the M4 and M5 this weekend.

This abnormal load is due to travel on the region's motorway network on Sunday morning as it delivers the transformer which will replace old equipment at the Iron Acton substation, in South Gloucestershire.

The transformer will begin its journey from Avonmouth Port at 8.00 am on Sunday and is expected to reach its destination by 2.30 pm – 3.00 pm.

The transporter lorry is 55 metres long by five metres wide and weighs 235 tonnes.  It will travel between 10 and 15 miles per hour and will be accompanied by a police escort and special haulage team.

Due to its size, the lorry must take an indirect route to the Iron Acton substation to avoid hazards, such as weak bridges and narrow turning points.  It is due to leave the Avonmouth docks via the M49.  It will then head east on the M4 before joining the M5 northbound.  It then travels to Junction 13 before returning southbound, where it will exit on to the B4509 at Junction 14.  It will pass through the villages of Cromhall, Bagstone and Rangeworthy, and follow the B4059 until it reaches Latteridge Village, close to its final destination.
