Academy players receive helping hand

Gloucestershire’s stars of the future have been given a helping hand thanks to grants from two different charities.
The Gloucestershire Cricket Trust (GCT) has made a major contribution Academy’s Summer Scholarship Scheme while the Brian Johnston Memorial Trust (BJMT) has helped support a number of young players with their living costs.
The scholarship programme allows talented young cricketers who are either in school or just out of it to train full time alongside the professional squad during the summer. The scheme provides the players with a unique opportunity to experience the world of professional cricket first hand.
Last year the GCT supported three young cricketers. Brandon Gilmour (pic left) graduated from the Academy to sign two-year contract with Gloucestershire, while Joe Barrett and Marc Lezar (pic right) have signed for the MCC Young Cricketers.
Second Team Coach and Academy Director Owen Dawkins said: “I'm delighted and again very thankful for the support provided by the Gloucestershire Cricket Trust. Since I began here in 2007 the Trust has been exceptionally supportive and passionate in helping talented young cricketers develop. I think all the players who have come through the Academy to the professional squad have been supported in one way or another along their journey.”
Three of Gloucestershire’s current Academy youngsters have been fortunate enough to receive support from the BJMT in their bid to become professional cricketers.
The BJMT provides scholarships to young male and female cricketers at county academy and university level who are in genuine financial need. Last year, 22 scholarships were awarded to help with coaching, travel and equipment costs.
Owen Dawkins added: “We are extremely lucky BJMT are once again able to support some of our potential next generation who need assistance. This money will be a fantastic help to the players and families towards their travel and kit costs.”
