A letter from Maxy
22 August 2019
Friday night’s Vitality Blast match against local rivals Somerset could be Gloucestershire legend, Michael Klinger’s final home appearance for the Club.
With this in mind, Michael took the time to write a letter of appreciation to supporters, teammates and other members of the Club to thank them for making his time at Gloucestershire a memorable one.
“We are still hopeful of qualifying first or second in the South Group but it’s been made a little harder with three washouts. With this, there is a chance Friday night’s game against Somerset could be our last Vitality Blast game in Bristol this season. If that is the case, it will be the last time I will play in front of our awesome home crowd.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all Gloucestershire fans for the support they have given me and the team since I arrived seven seasons ago. I will be forever grateful for the way the Club and its staff has supported me and in particular my family over the last seven years.
To all my coaches and teammates during my time here, a huge thank you. Hopefully our current group can continue our positive form and qualify for Finals Day again this season.
I have made lifelong friends here and for that I am truly appreciative. I hope I’ve been able to make a positive impact on Gloucestershire both on and off the field during my time at the Club. I wish everyone the very best and lots of success post this year’s Vitality Blast, County Championship and long into the future.
Let’s create another great atmosphere on Friday night against a talented Somerset team!”
In his seven years at Gloucestershire, Michael has become the leading T20 run maker for Gloucestershire with 2710 runs, an accomplishment he achieved this year against Kent at The Bristol County Ground. He also holds records for highest score with 126* made against Essex in 2015 and highest average at 40.44.
In 2015, ‘Maxy’ captained Gloucestershire to One-Day success. He made over 1600 runs and was named PCA (Professional Cricketers Association) Player of the Year in both the T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup after finishing as top scorer in both competitions. He then went on to become the highest run scorer in the T20 Blast in 2016 with 548 runs at an average of 49.81.
He originally joined Gloucestershire as Club captain in December 2012 - succeeding Alex Gidman - and has returned every year, initially as captain across all formats and but more recently as T20 captain.
Gloucestershire Cricket will be forever grateful for what Maxy has brought to the Club both on and off the field and we wish him all the best in all future ventures.
