750 local school children inspired at Cheltenham Cricket Festival
12 July 2017
More than 750 children had the chance to play on the pitch at the Cheltenham Festival during Gloucestershire Cricket’s annual schools’ days.
The pupils, who came from 28 primary schools from across the county, took part in coaching sessions before taking to the outfield to showcase their catching skills during the lunch interval.
The first event took place on day two of Gloucestershire’s Specsavers County Championship match with Glamorgan (July 4) and the second on July 10 – the second day of the county’s four day clash with Worcestershire.
On both days – as well as watching the cricket – the children got to test how fast they could bowl, challenge their batting ability and take part in an overarm throwing competition with qualified coaches from the Gloucestershire Cricket Board (GCB)
Gloucestershire Cricket Board growth development officer Scott Tremain, who organised the two days said:
“It was fantastic to see so many children having a wonderful time and showing so much enthusiasm for cricket. The Cheltenham Cricket Festival is a special event in the cricketing calendar and I am sure the children will have been inspired by the action they have seen and the chance to show their own skills on the hallowed turf of the College Ground.”
The annual schools’ days – which are free to take part in – are run in partnership between Gloucestershire Cricket and the GCB.
