25 June 2015

The atmosphere at the third day of Gloucestershire’s LV = County Championship match against Essex was transformed with the addition of 250 schoolchildren.

Pupils from 10 primaries cheered the players on and took part in coaching sessions at the second of four Schools’ Days taking place in 2015.

The youngsters were also given the opportunity to quiz Gloucestershire batsman Hamish Marshall on what it takes to be a professional cricketer before taking to the outfield during the interval to test their catching skills.

During the day the pupils found out how fast they could bowl in the inflatable bowling cage and rotated through coaching stations designed to develop all aspects of the game from batting to fielding. They were also given a workbook full of cricket-related tasks and had the chance to get Hamish’s autograph.

The event – which was run by the GCB in partnership with Gloucestershire Cricket – is supported by the GCB’s education partners Chance to Shine. It was the second of four this season - two at the Bristol County Ground and two at the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Festival.

More than 550 children have taken part so far this year with the overall number expected to top 1000.

The schools who attended on June 23 were (from Bristol unless stated): St Michael’s C of E (Winterbourne), St Johns Academy, (Coleford), Christ the King, West Town Lane Academy, Stoke Park, St Helen’s (Alveston), The Manor (Coalpit Heath), Glenfrome, Mangotsfield and Ashley Down Federation.

Some of these are among the 200 schools that are visited by GCB coaches each year – resulting in around 10,000 pupils receiving coaching.

The schools days were supported by Gloucestershire’s Cricketeers – volunteers who help out at T20 Blast matches and major events.

The other Gloucestershire Cricket schools days take place on July 9 and 15 at the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Festival.
